Our take
Key features
Metabo lists an LED shadow cutting line that needs no readjustment, electronic soft start that eases the motor up to speed, and a fast brake that stops the blade quickly after a cut. Dust and chips are extracted immediately, according to Metabo, and the saw is built from die cast aluminium.
Cutting depth is 92 mm at 90 degrees and 47 mm at 45 degrees. The tilt range runs from minus 2 to 47 degrees with preset stops, which allows slight back bevels for fitting skirting to out of square walls.
Width is not stated
Despite the pull function, the listing does not give the maximum cut width. That is a key number for sliding saws, so check Metabo's data sheet before buying if you need to cut wide boards. The bevel tilts one way only, so some compound mitres on crown moulding will need the board flipped.
Box contents and power
Included are two table extensions, a cable winder, a chip bag, a length guide, a material clamp, a 254 mm 48 tooth precision wood blade and a blade change tool. The saw runs on 240 V; the title quotes 1,800 W and the spec table 1,450 W, so check which applies. Metabo offers a three year manufacturer warranty.
The 17 g weight in the listing is a data error.
How it compares
The DeWalt DWS774 is a smaller 216 mm slider with a clear 250 x 62 mm capacity and an XPS shadow line, but much less depth. The Evolution R255SMS+ cuts multiple materials, and the Metabo KGS 305 M offers a bigger 305 mm blade. For cordless work, the DeWalt DCS782N lists 310 x 90 mm.
Verdict
Buy the KGS 254 M if you need deep cuts in posts and thick timber from a corded slider with a shadow line and brake, once you have confirmed the cut width. The DeWalt DWS774 suits lighter trim work with a clear capacity, and the Metabo KGS 305 M is the larger alternative.
