The KGS 305 M is the corded version of Metabo's largest mobile M class crosscut and mitre saw. It is for joiners, decking fitters and serious woodworkers who want a big 305 mm blade for wide and deep cuts but a saw that can still be carried to site. Its point of difference is that blend of large blade and Metabo's Precision Cut Line, an LED shadow system that needs no adjustment.

In its favour

  • The 305 mm blade gives the most depth of any corded saw in this guide.
  • Precision Cut Line LED shadow needs no readjustment, according to Metabo.
  • Undercut from minus 2 degrees helps fit skirting to uneven walls.

Good to know

  • Cut capacity is not given in this listing and the wattage figure looks wrong; check Metabo's sheet.
  • At 18.6 kg listed, it is a big saw for a small workshop.

Our take

Listed features

Metabo lists a Precision Cut Line, with a cleverly placed LED casting an exact shadow along the cut. The blade tilts from minus 2 to 47 degrees, so you can undercut slightly for tight fitting joints. The turntable has stop points for fast setting of common angles, and Metabo describes the motor as an extremely powerful universal motor.

Included are two table extensions, a length guide, a material clamp, a 305 mm 56 tooth wood blade and a blade change tool. The listed weight is 18.6 kg and speed is 3,700 rpm.

What is unclear

The cut capacity at 90 and 45 degrees is not given, which is the main figure for a 305 mm slider. The title quotes 1,600 W but the spec table says 77 W, an obvious error. Check Metabo's data sheet for capacity and power before deciding.

The bevel tilts one way, so some compound cuts on crown moulding will need the board turned around.

A 56 tooth blade and big capacity

A 56 tooth blade gives a clean finish on hardwood and trim while still cutting reasonably fast through softwood. A 305 mm blade with a slide normally offers wide crosscuts and deep cuts in posts, so this saw should cover most decking, framing and furniture work. Confirm with Metabo if you need a specific width.

Its cordless twin, the Metabo KGS 18 LTX BL 305, comes with the same accessory list and a slightly lower 17.4 kg weight.

Comparing it with other sliders

The Evolution R255SMS-DB+ lists 300 x 80 mm and bevels both ways, with a multi-material blade. The Metabo KGS 254 M offers a stated 92 mm depth on a 254 mm blade. For skirting and architrave only, DeWalt's 216 mm DWS774 is the lighter tool to carry. For cordless, the DeWalt DCS782N lists 310 x 90 mm.

Verdict

Choose the KGS 305 M if you want a large corded slider with a reliable shadow line and good blade for timber work, and have confirmed its capacity. For double bevel work, the Evolution R255SMS-DB+ is stronger, and the Metabo KGS 254 M gives a stated deep cut in a smaller saw.
