DeWalt's DWS774 is a compact corded slide mitre saw for second fix carpenters, flooring fitters and DIYers who mostly cut skirting, architrave, flooring and decking. It is built around a 216 mm blade and DeWalt's XPS shadow system. What sets it apart is the balance of size and capacity: a 250 mm wide crosscut from a saw listed at 12 kg, light enough to move between rooms.

Our take

Listed specifications

DeWalt lists a 1,400 W motor and a cut capacity of 62 x 250 mm. The spec table adds 4,500 rpm, a 48 tooth blade and a 12 kg weight. The bullets are brief and repeat the motor rating, so bevel range, fence height and mitre stops are not covered.

A 48 tooth blade is a good all round choice for trim and flooring, giving tidy cuts without being slow. For hardwood flooring or painted trim, a finer blade with more teeth would give a cleaner edge, though it would cut a little more slowly.

XPS shadow line in use

The XPS system uses an LED to cast the blade's shadow onto the workpiece. Lower the blade to the wood and the shadow shows exactly where the kerf will fall, on either side. Unlike a laser, there is nothing to calibrate, and it stays accurate after blade changes.

For fitting skirting and architrave, where a millimetre matters, this is a practical feature. It also helps in poorly lit rooms, because the LED lights the cut area at the same time.

Capacity limits

At 62 mm, the depth is the shallowest of the sliding saws in our guide. It handles skirting, decking and studwork, but fence posts and thick sleepers will need two passes or a larger saw. The 250 mm width covers most shelving and flooring boards.

Alternatives

The Metabo KGS 254 M offers 92 mm depth for heavier timber. The DeWalt DWS777 is the other 216 mm DeWalt with XPS, built around a traditional pull and tilt design with an AirLock dust port. The Evolution R255SMS-DB+ gives double bevel and 300 x 80 mm capacity for crown and compound work. If you want cordless, the DeWalt DCS782N is the 305 mm XR option.

Verdict

Choose the DWS774 if you want a light, accurate corded slider for skirting, flooring and decking with a reliable shadow line. If you cut thick posts, the Metabo KGS 254 M is the better fit, and the Evolution R255SMS-DB+ suits those who need double bevel compound cuts.
