On many UK building sites the vans are split between yellow and red. DeWalt and Milwaukee both target trades with tough tools, big ranges and high output batteries, and both have loyal users. This article compares the two systems, then two bare 18 V hammer drills, using widely known facts and listing figures.

DeWalt XR and FlexVolt

DeWalt's 18 V XR range covers drills, drivers, saws, SDS drills, grinders and much more. FlexVolt batteries can run at 18 V in XR tools or 54 V in FlexVolt tools, which DeWalt uses for large mitre saws, table saws and grinders. The XR listing for the DCD799 says the range covers more than 250 tools.

DeWalt also makes a 12 V XR range for compact work. In the US the 18 V range is sold as 20 V MAX; UK packs are the same cells described by nominal voltage.

Milwaukee M18 Fuel and M12

Milwaukee's M18 range has standard and Fuel tools, with Fuel being the brushless top tier. Its high output and Forge batteries target heavy tools. M12 is a separate compact range with its own batteries, very popular for installation work.

Milwaukee also has the MX Fuel range for heavy equipment, separate from M18. For most users M18 and perhaps M12 cover everything.

Batteries, chargers and cost of entry

The first battery and charger are the expensive part of joining any platform, so a kit or twin pack is usually cheaper than a bare tool plus batteries. Both brands sell kits with 2, 4, 5 Ah and larger packs. Compare in watt hours: an 18 V 5 Ah pack holds 90 Wh. Our battery energy calculator does the sum.

Once you are on a platform, bare tools keep costs down. That is why the first purchase matters: see how to choose a battery platform.

Feel, weight and site practicality

On paper the two drills above are close in speed and weight, with Milwaukee ahead on torque. In the hand, grip size, trigger feel and balance with your chosen battery matter more. A drill that feels right gets used with better control and less fatigue.

On site, practical details count: belt hooks, bit holders, LED placement and whether the tool stands up with a battery fitted. Both brands sell tough stackable cases, DeWalt TSTAK and TOUGHSYSTEM and Milwaukee PACKOUT, which also lock you into a storage system.

Warranty and service

Both brands offer extended warranties in the UK, usually on registration within a set time after purchase. The Milwaukee FPD2 listing mentions a 3 year UK and EU warranty, and DeWalt listings mention multi year cover. Batteries and chargers can have different terms, so check the current policy on each brand's UK site.

Buy from authorised sellers so warranty claims are straightforward, and keep your receipt with the registration confirmation.

Which should you choose?

Choose Milwaukee if maximum drill and driver torque matters most, or you want M12 compact tools. Choose DeWalt if FlexVolt saws, or particular DeWalt site tools, are on your list, or the grip suits you better. Colleagues on the same platform can also share batteries on site, which is a practical tie breaker.

Note:Use the side handle on high torque drills, keep bits sharp and wear eye protection. Follow the manual and HSE guidance on vibration and noise for long drilling sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Milwaukee better than DeWalt? Neither is better across the board. Milwaukee Fuel drills often list higher torque, while DeWalt's FlexVolt system powers large saws on shared packs.

Can I use FlexVolt batteries in 18 V DeWalt tools? Yes. FlexVolt packs work in DeWalt 18 V XR tools as well as 54 V FlexVolt tools, according to DeWalt.

Do Milwaukee M18 batteries fit M12? No. They are separate systems with different battery shapes, although some Milwaukee chargers take both.

Are US tools the same as UK ones? Often the tool is similar, but US listings are 20 V MAX labelled and chargers are 120 V with US plugs. Buy UK listings with UK chargers.
