The DCD799P2T is DeWalt's compact XR hammer drill driver sold as a full kit with two 5.0 Ah batteries. It is for fitters, electricians and keen DIYers who work in cupboards, roof spaces and on ladders, and who want long run time without a bulky drill. What sets it apart is that combination: a short brushless body rated at 74 Nm with two of the largest packs found in any home kit in our guides.

  • 74 Nm and two gears handle large holes in timber as well as everyday fixings.
  • 15 torque settings and an LED work light are listed.
  • Two 5 Ah XR packs and a UK plug charger are included.

Our take

The listed figures

DeWalt quotes up to 74 Nm, 1,650 rpm, a 13 mm chuck and two speeds through an all metal transmission. There are 15 torque positions for driving. Listed drilling capacities are 30 mm in wood and 13 mm in metal. An LED worklight helps in dark corners.

One spec field reads 26 Nm as the maximum torque, which likely refers to soft joint torque, while the headline torque figure is 74 Nm. Either way, the main bullet and title support the 74 Nm rating.

Kit contents and the XR battery system

In the TSTAK kitbox you get the drill, two 5 Ah XR packs with charge indicators, a multi-voltage charger, a magnetic bit holder and a belt hook. The listing says the XR packs work across more than 250 DeWalt tools, so the batteries will carry over to saws, grinders and lights later on.

The UK plug is noted in the title, which matters if you buy from an import seller.

Compared with the bigger DeWalt drills

The DCD996P2 is the full size option at 95 Nm with three speeds and the same battery count. It suits heavy boring and site work, but it is longer and heavier. The DCD805NT is another compact XR hammer drill rated at 90 Nm, but it is sold bare. If you already own XR packs, the DCD805NT gives more torque for less outlay on the tool itself.

Against the Bosch GSB 18V-45, the DeWalt offers far more torque and run time but is a heavier package once the 5 Ah pack is fitted.

Who should pass

If you only hang pictures and build furniture, the two large packs add weight you do not need. The weight of the drill with a pack fitted is not stated, so try one in a shop if handling is a concern.

Verdict

Buy the DCD799P2T if you want a compact, brushless DeWalt with enough torque for most fixing and long battery life straight from the box. Choose the DCD996P2 for heavy boring, or the bare DCD805NT if you already own XR batteries and want more torque in a compact body.
