This Ryobi bundle is for home owners who look after both the house and the garden and want one battery system for both. It joins the R18PD3 combi drill starter kit with the OPT1845 pole hedge trimmer, which is supplied body only and runs on the drill's ONE+ packs. Nothing else in our home drill guide adds a garden tool, so the appeal is two jobs covered for anyone setting up from scratch.
- Voltage
- 18 V
- Max torque
- 50 Nm
- Weight
- Not stated
- Batteries in box
- 2 x 1.5 Ah
In its favour
- The listing states 50 Nm, two speeds of 500 and 1,800 rpm and 24 torque settings.
- A 13 mm ratcheting chuck takes standard drill and screwdriver bits.
- The pole hedge trimmer runs on the same ONE+ batteries, so the bundle covers garden jobs too.
Good to know
- The 1.5 Ah packs are small, especially if they also power the hedge trimmer.
- The hedge trimmer is body only, so it shares the drill's two batteries.
Our take
The drill half
Ryobi lists the R18PD3 as a combi drill for masonry, wood, plastic and metal, with a ratcheting chuck that accepts bits up to 13 mm. A two speed gearbox gives 500 and 1,800 rpm, and torque reaches 50 Nm. There are 24 torque settings for driving screws, which is a fine spread and helps stop screws sinking too deep in soft material.
For household tasks, 50 Nm is a comfortable figure. It handles wall plugs, shelf brackets and most timber screws, and the low gear gives control when driving longer fixings.
The hedge trimmer half
The OPT1845 has a 45 cm diamond ground blade with an 18 mm gap, so it can take branches up to that thickness. Its head articulates through 115 degrees with four positions, letting you cut the top of a tall hedge from the ground or angle the blade along the side. A pole tool like this saves moving a ladder along the hedge line.
The listing does not give the trimmer's weight or reach, so check those if you have very tall hedges.
Batteries are the weak point
The starter kit includes two 1.5 Ah packs. They keep the drill light, but a pole trimmer draws far more power than a drill, and 1.5 Ah will give only a short run before a swap. A larger ONE+ pack would make the trimmer far more useful, so budget for one if your hedges are long.
By contrast, the Ryobi RPD18BL2 bundle comes with a 5.0 Ah pack and a brushless drill, though no garden tool.
Alternatives
If you do not need the trimmer, the Makita DHP453RFE with two 3 Ah packs or the Bosch GSB 18V-45 are simpler drill kits. In the power tool kits guide, the Ryobi R18PD3 drill kit with the OCS1830 chainsaw is the pick for logs and branches rather than hedges.
Verdict
Buy this bundle if you want one battery platform for DIY and hedge cutting and are willing to add a bigger ONE+ pack for the trimmer. If you only need a drill, the Ryobi RPD18BL2 with its 5 Ah pack or the Makita DHP453RFE kit is better value for that single job.
