This Ryobi bundle joins the R18PD3 combi drill starter kit with the OCS1830 brushless chainsaw. It is for home owners with gardens, allotments or log burners who want a drill for the house and a small chainsaw for pruning and cutting branches. The chainsaw is what makes it different from the other Ryobi kits in our guide, which pair the same drill with a hedge trimmer or a nailer.
- Tools
- Combi drill and 30 cm chainsaw
- Batteries
- 2 x 1.5 Ah
- Charger
- Included in drill starter kit
- Platform
- Ryobi ONE+
In its favour
- The drill is listed with 50 Nm, two speeds and 24 torque settings.
- The chainsaw has a brushless motor, automatic oiling, tool free tensioning and a chain brake.
- ONE+ batteries run a very wide range of Ryobi garden and power tools.
Good to know
- Two 1.5 Ah packs are small for a chainsaw, so expect short cutting time per charge.
- A chainsaw needs proper PPE and training; read the manual and HSE guidance first.
Our take
The chainsaw in detail
Ryobi lists an 18 V brushless motor, a 30 cm Oregon bar and chain, and a chain speed of 10 metres per second. Oiling is automatic, chain tension adjusts without tools, and a mechanical chain brake adds safety. A 30 cm bar suits pruning, trimming fallen branches and cutting small logs for a stove.
A cordless saw is quieter and easier to start than a petrol one, which suits short jobs in a domestic garden.
The drill half of the kit
The R18PD3 combi drill has two speeds of 500 and 1,800 rpm, a peak of 50 Nm and 24 torque settings, according to Ryobi. Its ratcheting chuck takes bits up to 13 mm, and it handles masonry, wood, plastic and metal. For shelves, curtain poles and garden furniture, that is plenty.
Small batteries, big saw
The starter kit supplies two 1.5 Ah packs and a charger. Those suit the drill but are small for a chainsaw, which draws far more power. Expect short cutting sessions per charge. A larger ONE+ pack would make the chainsaw much more practical, so budget for one if you have more than a few branches to cut.
Chainsaws are dangerous tools. Wear chainsaw trousers or chaps, gloves, eye and ear protection, and follow the manual and HSE guidance.
Alternatives
The Ryobi R18PD3 bundle with the OPT1845 pole hedge trimmer suits hedges rather than branches and logs. The Einhell PXC garden multi-tool kit includes a pole hedge trimmer and pruning saw head with two 4 Ah packs, better sized batteries for garden work, but no drill. The Ryobi RPD18BL2 kit has a brushless drill and a 5 Ah pack if you want a larger battery from the start.
Verdict
Buy this bundle if you want a ONE+ drill for the house and a compact brushless chainsaw for garden pruning, and you plan to add a bigger battery. If garden work is the priority, the Einhell PXC garden multi-tool kit has larger packs, and the Ryobi OPT1845 bundle suits hedge cutting instead.
