The HiKOKI DH40MC is a 230 V SDS max rotary hammer with 7.1 J of impact energy and a 40 mm rating in concrete. It sits in the middle of the SDS max class: strong enough for large anchors and breaking, but lighter than the biggest machines at a listed 7.1 kg. It suits builders and installers who want one SDS max tool for regular drilling and chiselling.

In its favour
- The listing gives 7.1 J of impact energy and 40 mm concrete drilling.
- A large damper and air cushion are listed to reduce impact and piston reaction.
- An integrated LED light and 12 chisel positions are part of the spec.
Good to know

- The case contents are limited to grease, a side handle and a stopper.
Our take
The key numbers
HiKOKI lists 1,100 W of input power and 7.1 J of impact energy, with concrete drilling up to 40 mm. The no load speed is 620 rpm. Those figures cover most resin anchors, through holes for services and medium breaking work on screed and blockwork.
Two modes are available: rotary hammer and hammer only.
Vibration reduction
A large damper and a high volume air cushion are listed to reduce impact and piston reaction force, which HiKOKI says allows significant vibration reduction. An ergonomic soft grip handle is listed for control and longer comfortable working. Lower vibration helps you keep going through a run of holes without numb hands.
Handy features
An integrated LED light shows the work surface, which helps in risers and ceiling voids. Twelve selectable chisel positions let you set the chisel angle for each task. SDS max bits and chisels change in one action rather than two, which speeds up swapping between drilling and breaking.
In the case
The listing names hammer grease, an injection moulded case, a side handle and a stopper. No bits or chisels are included. The supply is listed as 230 V, so check plug and site supply requirements before buying.
Because there is no rotation only mode, keep a separate drill for wood and metal. For breaking, a pointed chisel and a wide flat chisel cover most jobs, from tile removal to cutting back concrete edges.
How it compares
The HiKOKI DH45MA has more impact energy at 11.3 J and 45 mm capacity but weighs 9.4 kg. The Makita HR4013C offers 40 mm and AVT with no stated joule figure. The Einhell TE-RH 40 3F lists 10 J for occasional users. The DH40MC balances power and weight well.
Verdict
The DH40MC is a good all round SDS max choice for trades who need 40 mm drilling and regular chiselling without the weight of the biggest hammers. If capacity matters most, the HiKOKI DH45MA is the step up, and Makita users may prefer the HR4013C with AVT.
