The DCD805NT is for people who already run DeWalt XR batteries and want a compact hammer drill without paying for more packs. It is supplied in a TSTAK box with a belt hook and magnetic bit holder, but no battery or charger. The thing that sets it apart in our compact guide is the torque: 90 Nm from a short brushless body, matching full size drills from a few years ago.

In its favour

  • 90 Nm from an ultra compact body, according to the listing, is the strongest figure in this guide.
  • 15 torque settings, a two speed all-metal gearbox and a three mode pivoting LED are listed.
  • Fits all DeWalt 18 V XR batteries and chargers, so existing owners pay only for the tool.

Good to know

  • Bare unit: no battery or charger is included, so first time buyers must add both.
  • The listing does not give the weight with a battery fitted.

Our take

Listed features

DeWalt lists 90 Nm maximum torque, up to 2,000 rpm, a 13 mm chuck and a two speed all metal transmission. There are 15 clutch positions for screwdriving. The LED sits in the foot of the tool, pivots, and has three brightness modes, which is more useful than a fixed light when you are working into a cupboard corner.

The hammer function covers masonry, so this is a true combi drill rather than a plain drill driver. Wood capacity is listed as 1 inch, and metal as 13 mm.

Tool only means planning ahead

No battery and no charger are included. If you own XR packs, that is ideal, since you are not paying for duplicates. If you do not, you will need to add a pack and charger, and the total may exceed a kit like the DCD799P2T, which ships with two 5 Ah packs.

The listing does not give the tool's weight with a pack fitted. Pair it with a smaller 2 Ah pack if you want to keep it as light as possible for overhead work.

Versus other compact drills

The DCD799P2T is DeWalt's compact kit at 74 Nm, so the DCD805NT is the stronger tool. The DeWalt DCD800NT is very similar on paper, also 90 Nm and sold bare. Its title calls it a hammer drill driver, yet its bullets and spec table describe a plain drill driver, while the DCD805 listing clearly describes a hammer function.

Outside DeWalt, the Makita DHP483Z is a lighter compact combi at 726 g, but the Makita listing gives no comparable torque figure.

Who it is not meant for

First time buyers with no batteries, and anyone who never drills masonry and might be happy with a plain drill driver instead.

Verdict

Buy the DCD805NT if you already own DeWalt XR packs and want a compact hammer drill with near full size torque. Without batteries, the DCD799P2T kit is simpler, and the DCD800NT is the sibling to consider if you rarely drill brick, once you confirm its mode.
