The Makita HP002G is a compact combi drill for Makita's 40 V max XGT battery system. It is not about headline torque: the listing gives 64 Nm. Its appeal is the platform and protection. If you already run XGT saws, grinders or SDS hammers, it lets you keep one set of batteries, and XPT sealing helps it cope with dusty and damp sites.

Our take

Platform first

XGT is Makita's 40 V max range for heavy duty cordless tools. Buying a drill on the same platform means you can share packs and chargers with the rest of your kit. The listing makes clear that batteries and chargers are not included, so this suits existing XGT owners rather than newcomers.

The specs show a 36 V figure and 2,200 rpm top speed, with a 13 mm chuck.

Protection and motor

Makita lists XPT, Extreme Protection Technology, for optimum protection against dust and splashes of water even in harsh conditions. That matters on demolition, groundwork and outdoor jobs where drills get covered in grit or caught in rain. A brushless motor is listed for endurance, longer life and a compact design.

Torque and expectations

At 64 Nm the HP002G is the least powerful drill in our trade combi guide. It will handle general drilling, screwdriving and hammer drilling for wall plugs, but large augers and hole saws will be slower than on the HiKOKI DV36DC or Milwaukee M18FPD2. The listing gives very little else, and its weight figure of 2.6 g is clearly a data error.

For context, 64 Nm is still more than many home DIY combi drills offer, so it will cope with shelves, stud fixings and pilot holes in hardwood without strain. It is only against the flagship tools in this guide that it looks modest. Users who need more turning force on XGT may want to compare Makita's larger 40 V drills before deciding.

In the box

The listing names the drill and a screwdriver bit. There is no side handle mentioned, no case and no battery. Plan on a Makpac or other storage if you want to protect it in the van.

Verdict

Buy the HP002G if you are already invested in Makita XGT and want a sealed, compact combi drill that shares your 40 V batteries. If you need maximum torque, the HiKOKI DV36DC or Milwaukee M18FPD2 are far stronger, and Bosch owners will get more from the GSB 18V-110 C.
