Milwaukee's M12 FDDX is an installation drill for kitchen fitters, joiners, electricians and plumbers who spend their days inside cabinets and between studs. The point of difference is the removable chuck system with four heads, which lets one tool switch between a standard chuck and other head types for awkward positions. It is sold as a kit with two 2.0 Ah REDLITHIUM packs and a charger.

Our take

Four heads on one drill

Milwaukee describes this as a high performance compact 4 in 1 installation drill with a removable chuck system and four heads. The listing does not name each head, so check Milwaukee's page if you need a particular one, such as an offset or right angle attachment. The concept is clear: change the front end rather than reaching for a different tool.

The spec table gives 34 Nm, two speeds, up to 1,600 rpm and a 10 mm chuck. Listed capacities are 1 inch in wood and 10 mm in metal.

No hammer mode

This is a drill driver with no percussion function. It will not drill brick or block efficiently, and the drill type is listed as a basic drill. For an installer working mainly in timber, sheet materials and metal, that does not matter. For anyone hanging things on masonry walls, it is a real limitation.

Batteries and platform

The kit includes two 2.0 Ah REDLITHIUM packs, which Milwaukee says deliver fade free performance and more run time over the pack life. Two small packs suit a compact tool and mean one can charge while the other works.

M12 packs do not fit M18 tools. If you also use Milwaukee M18 drills, you will run two battery types, though the M12-18FC charger supplied with the M18FPD2 kit takes both.

Compared with other compact drills

The Bosch GSB 12V-35 is the better choice if you need hammer drilling in the same small size. The Metabo PowerMaxx BS BL is another 12 V drill driver, listed at 700 g and 38 Nm, but without the interchangeable heads.

The listing gives the kit weight as 3 kg, which covers the drill, both packs, the charger and the heads, so the tool itself will be much lighter in the hand.

Verdict

Buy the M12 FDDX kit if your work is fitting and installing in tight spaces and you would use the swappable heads. If you need to drill masonry, the Bosch GSB 12V-35 suits you better, and if you just want a light plain drill driver, the Metabo PowerMaxx BS BL is simpler.
