The Makita DHR280ZJ is a brushless SDS plus rotary hammer that runs on two 18 V LXT batteries at once for 36 V. The idea is corded style performance without a cable, using packs that many trades already own. Soft start and anti-vibration are listed, and it comes in a Makpac case. Our take
Twin battery power
Two 18 V LXT batteries combine to give 36 V, which drives a brushless motor. The specs list 980 rpm and a wood capacity of 32 mm. Makita does not give impact energy or concrete capacity in this listing, so check the data sheet if you need exact figures for anchors.
Brushless motors avoid carbon brushes and tend to deliver more runtime per charge than brushed designs.
Comfort and control
Soft start is listed, which helps the bit start a hole cleanly without wandering, especially on smooth concrete or tiles. Anti-vibration reduces fatigue over a long day. A side handle and depth stop come in the case, and both are worth fitting for consistent anchor holes.
Weight and batteries
The listed weight is 5.1 kg, and that may or may not include batteries. With two packs fitted, expect a substantial tool. It needs two LXT batteries to run at all, so make sure you have a pair of charged packs, ideally of similar capacity. No batteries or charger are included.
The listing states a 1 year warranty with a further 2 years if registered within 30 days.
In the Makpac
Makita includes bit grease, a depth stop, a side handle and a Makpac case that stacks with other Makita cases. No bits are supplied.
Because the case is part of Makita's stacking system, it can travel clipped to the cases for your drill and impact driver, which keeps bits and batteries together on site.
Other Makita SDS options
The DHR263ZJ is another twin 18 V model with three clearly listed modes but no mention of a brushless motor. The DHR182Z is a single battery brushless model for lighter work. The corded HR2631FT13 is the alternative if mains power is always nearby.
Verdict
Buy the DHR280ZJ if you own several Makita LXT batteries and want a brushless cordless SDS plus hammer with soft start and anti-vibration for daily concrete work. For lighter jobs, the DHR182Z runs on a single pack, and if mains power is available, the corded HR2631FT13 offers AVT and a full kit.
