Our take

Features from the listing

Makita lists a brushless motor, an electric brake, two mechanical gears, 21 torque settings plus a drill mode, variable speed by trigger, an LED job light and a keyless chuck. The electric brake stops the chuck as soon as you release the trigger, which helps when driving many screws in a row.

The spec table gives 2,000 rpm, a 13 mm chuck, a 38 mm wood capacity and a weight of 1.8 kg.

Torque figures

The listing shows two torque figures, 60 Nm as maximum and 54 Nm in another field. These may be hard and soft joint figures, but the listing does not say. Either way, this is a mid range drill driver: enough for most screws and holes up to 38 mm in timber, not the tool for big augers or coach screws.

Twenty one clutch settings give fine control when driving into soft materials.

Warranty and kit

Makita offers one year of warranty plus two more if you register within 30 days. The listing warns that using non genuine batteries or chargers voids the guarantee. Two 5 Ah packs give generous run time for a drill of this size, and the Makpac case holds the drill, packs and charger.

Compared with other Makita drills

The DDF486RTJ has the same battery kit and far more torque at 130 Nm, but is heavier at 2.6 kg. The DDF485RFJ is a compact brushless driver with smaller 3 Ah packs and 50 Nm. The DDF482RFEB gives 62 Nm with 3 Ah packs. For brick and block, the DHP453RFE combi kit has a hammer mode.

For someone who mainly assembles, fits and fixes in timber, the DDF484RTJ hits a sensible middle ground between the compact DDF485 and the heavy DDF486.

Verdict

Buy the DDF484RTJ if you want a well built brushless Makita drill driver with an electric brake and two large batteries for everyday work in wood and metal. For heavy boring, the DDF486RTJ is stronger, and if you need masonry drilling, a combi such as the DHP453RFE or DHP483Z suits better.
