The DCD996P2 is DeWalt's full size XR brushless combi drill sold as a kit. It is for trades and heavy DIY users who want one drill to cover everything from masonry to large timber bores. The feature that sets it apart from most drills in our kit guide is the three speed gearbox: a dedicated low gear for big bits and driving, and a high gear for small holes in metal and masonry.
- Max torque
- 95 Nm
- Batteries in box
- 2 x 5.0 Ah
- Charger
- Multi-voltage XR charger
- Chuck
- 12.7 mm
- Speeds

In its favour
- The listing states 95 Nm of torque, enough headroom for large augers, hole saws and long screws in timber.
- Three mechanical speeds give a slow gear for driving and a fast one for small bits in metal and masonry.
- Two 5.0 Ah packs with charge indicators and a TSTAK case are in the box, so nothing extra is needed to start.
Good to know
- The listing gives a weight of 1 kg, which looks like the bare body only; expect a heavier tool with a 5 Ah pack fitted.
- Chuck size is listed as 12.7 mm and the bullet points are very short, so check the full DeWalt spec sheet.
Our take
What the listing says
DeWalt's own bullets are minimal: two 5.0 Ah lithium ion packs, three speed variable and reverse, and a 90 minute charge time. The spec table fills in 95 Nm maximum torque, 820 W maximum power and a 12.7 mm chuck. Drilling capacities are listed as 26 mm for both wood and metal, which looks like a data entry error for metal, so check DeWalt's figures.
Some fields are clearly unreliable: 20,000 rpm and a 1 kg weight do not match a full size combi with a 5 Ah pack. Treat those as listing mistakes.
In the TSTAK case
The kit includes the drill, two 5 Ah packs with state of charge indicators, a multi-voltage XR charger, a belt hook, a multi position side handle and a heavy duty TSTAK case. The side handle is worth using with large hole saws and augers, where a 95 Nm motor can twist hard if the bit binds.
Placing it in the DeWalt line
The DCD799P2T is the compact kit alternative, at 74 Nm with two speeds and the same pair of 5 Ah packs. It is easier to handle in tight spaces but slower in large bores. The DCK276P2 twin pack adds the DCF887 impact driver to this same drill, which is worth considering if you do a lot of screw driving.
Outside DeWalt, the Milwaukee M18FPD2 kit claims 135 Nm but ships with only one battery.
Not the best fit for
Light household users and anyone working overhead for long periods. A full size combi with a 5 Ah pack is a heavy tool to hold above your head, and the extra gear and torque are wasted on small fixings.
Verdict
Pick the DCD996P2 if you want a full size, three speed DeWalt with two big packs and a case, ready for site and renovation work. Choose the DCD799P2T for a more compact tool, or the DCK276P2 twin pack if you also need an impact driver.
