The DDF458Z is a Makita 18 V LXT drill driver sold as the body only, with no battery, charger or case. It is for Makita owners who already have LXT packs and want a drill driver for wood and metal work, perhaps as a second drill. What sets it apart in our Makita comparison is the stated 65 mm maximum capacity in wood, the largest figure in the group, which points to big bits and hole saws.

Our take
Listed features
Makita lists 21 torque settings plus a drill mode, a single sleeve keyless chuck, a twin LED job light and a battery fuel gauge. Capacities are 65 mm in wood and 13 mm in steel. The single sleeve chuck lets you tighten a bit with one hand while holding the trigger, which is quicker than a two sleeve chuck.
The spec table gives up to 2,000 rpm and a 13 mm chuck.
Torque is unclear
The listing gives 10 Nm in one field and 300 inch pounds in another, and the number of speeds field reads 21, which is really the clutch count. None of these is reliable. Check Makita's own data sheet for the true hard and soft torque before relying on the drill for heavy work.
The 65 mm wood capacity suggests a strong drill, but without a clear torque figure that remains an inference.
Body only and warranty
No battery, charger or case is included, so this only makes sense for LXT owners. A 5 Ah pack will suit large bits and long sessions. Makita lists one year of warranty plus two more on registration within 30 days, although another field says no warranty, so check with the seller.
Other Makita drills
The DHP483Z is a brushless combi drill also sold body only, at 726 g with a hammer mode for masonry. The DDF486RTJ kit offers a clear 130 Nm with batteries. The DDF485RFJ is a compact brushless drill driver kit with 3 Ah packs. If you want certainty on torque, those listings are clearer.
As a second drill, the DDF458Z can stay fitted with a drill bit while another tool holds a driver bit.
Verdict
Buy the DDF458Z if you already run Makita LXT packs and want a drill driver with large wood capacity as a main or second drill, after confirming its torque. If you need masonry drilling, the DHP483Z is the bare combi to choose, and the DDF486RTJ kit suits those who want stated high torque.
