The HR2600 is the simplest corded SDS plus hammer in Makita's range. It drills and hammer drills, but it has no chisel mode and no second chuck. In return you get a straightforward, double insulated 800 W tool with a torque limiter and a good stated capacity for core bits. It suits installers who only need to make holes in masonry.

Our take

Drilling capacity

Makita lists 26 mm in concrete with a TCT bit, 68 mm with a TCT core bit and 80 mm with a diamond core bit. In wood it reaches 32 mm and in steel 13 mm. That diamond core figure is useful for running soil pipes or ventilation through block walls.

The motor is rated at 800 W with variable speed control, forward and reverse rotation and a lock on button for long cores.

A lock on button sounds minor, but on a long core through a cavity wall it saves holding the trigger for minutes at a time.

Safety and protection features

A torque limiter is listed, which slips the drive if a bit jams so the body does not snap round as hard. Double insulation is also listed. These are basic but welcome on a tool that may run for long spells on a core bit.

The listed weight is 2.9 kg, the lightest of the corded SDS plus drills in our guide.

What the two modes mean

Two mode operation means rotation only and rotation with hammering. There is no hammer only setting, so you cannot use it to chisel tiles or chase cables. If you think you might need that later, the HR2630T or Bosch GBH 2-26 are better long term buys.

In the case you get a depth gauge and side handle. No quick change chuck is supplied.

Value against the rest

The HR2600 makes sense when you want a light corded tool purely for drilling and coring. The Makita HR2631FT13 adds AVT, a chisel mode and two chucks for more outlay. The Bosch GBH 2-26 adds a stated 2.7 J and chisel mode. Choose by whether you will ever need to break out material.

Verdict

The HR2600 suits plumbers, electricians and DIYers who only drill and core masonry and want a light, simple corded tool. If chiselling is ever on the list, choose the Makita HR2630T or Bosch GBH 2-26 instead, and for long working days the HR2631FT13 with AVT is kinder on the arms.
