The HR3210FCT is the heavyweight of Makita's SDS plus range. It is rated for 32 mm holes in concrete and 90 mm TCT core bits, so it bridges the gap between a typical 26 mm SDS plus hammer and a full SDS max machine. Plumbers, heating engineers and builders who drill for waste pipes, flues and ducts are the obvious buyers.

Our take
Capacity and control
Makita lists a maximum of 32 mm in concrete and 90 mm with a TCT core bit. The 850 W motor has soft start, variable speed and constant speed under load, so it starts holes cleanly and does not slow as the bit bites. A torque limiter is listed to protect the gearbox when a bit snags.
There are three modes plus 24 bit angle settings, which lets you lock a chisel at the most comfortable angle for chasing or tile removal.
Comfort features
Anti-vibration technology is built in, which is welcome on a tool of this size. An LED job light helps when drilling in cupboards or under stairs. The quick change chuck lets you swap from SDS plus to a three jaw chuck for wood and metal.
The listing gives a weight of 5.4 kg. That is heavy for overhead work but provides useful mass when pushing a large core bit into a wall.
In the carry case
Makita includes bit grease, a depth stop, the quick change chuck, a side handle and the carry case. No bits are supplied, so budget for core bits and long SDS bits if you plan to use the full capacity. Impact energy is not stated in the listing, which makes a direct comparison with Bosch harder.
Remember that core drilling at this size puts real load through your wrists, so the side handle should stay fitted whenever a core bit is in the chuck.
Is it the right size for you
If most holes are under 16 mm, the Makita HR2631FT13 or Bosch GBH 2-28 F will be lighter and quicker to handle. If you need 40 mm holes or heavy breaking, the Makita HR4013C on SDS max is the next step. The HR3210FCT suits users who want big hole capacity while keeping SDS plus bits.
Verdict
Buy the HR3210FCT if you regularly core and drill large holes but want to stay on SDS plus accessories. For lighter fixing work, the Bosch GBH 2-28 F or Makita HR2631FT13 will be far less tiring, and for 40 mm and above the Makita HR4013C is the better tool.
